Basalt & Blue Chalcedony
A cold-weather traverse through volcanic country in search of soft blue seams and botryoidal forms.

Following the basalt
Winter sharpened every edge of the playa. The first mile offered almost no color, only black basalt and faded sage, which made each seam of chalcedony feel improbably luminous.
We worked existing float and avoided fresh disturbance. Small fragments led uphill toward a weathered exposure where pale blue material filled narrow pockets in the volcanic rock.

Design begins in the field
A good cabochon is often visible before the rough leaves the ground. The strongest piece had an asymmetrical rind surrounding a clear blue center; keeping that contrast would later determine the outline, dome, and final orientation.
A note on access: Always confirm current land ownership, collecting rules, closures, and quantity limits before a trip. Leave sensitive sites and cultural material undisturbed.
